7 Things You Should Clean to Get Ready for the New Year

on Jan 6, 2020

It’s officially the year 2020 and as tradition stands, a new year means a new routine. So since the new year is just beginning there’s no better time than the present to start the year off on the right foot.
Today we’re showing you 7 things around the house you can clean to get ready for the new year.

The Oven

Sometimes it’s hard to clean the oven. Even when it’s on your monthly cleaning routine. Since it’s the beginning of a new year, it’s a good time to clean your oven to help prevent respiratory issues and skin irritations.

Corrosive chemicals found in oven cleaners can tend to cause more harm than good. So when cleaning out your oven use a mixture of baking soda, dish soap, and warm water to create a paste-like solution. Allow the solution to sit for about 5 minutes before wiping it away with a damp microfiber cloth and there you have it. A fresh clean oven for the new year.

The Fridge

Now take a look in the refrigerator. Discard any leftover food from the holidays and check dates for anything that’s expired. Once you’ve done that, you’ll want to take everything out of the fridge and wipe it down completely. Wipe down all the shelving, the drawers, and all the nooks and crannies before putting everything back.

Another good tip is to pull your refrigerator out from the wall (if you’re able to) and unplug it. Then taking your vacuum and brush attachment use it to run along the coils of the fridge and get any dust mites that may have accumulated over the last year. This will help reduce the amount of energy being used by the fridge.

The Vents

In any home, the vents are one of the easiest ways to protect your home’s air quality. And what better way to start off a new year other than breathing in fresh clean air? None that we can think of. Get rid of dust bunnies by vacuuming over the vents and then removing the vent covers and allowing them to soak in dish soap and hot water.

The Floors

Have you ever heard of a house sweep? Some people find it a good tradition to sweep everything out of the house for good luck in the new year. Now as much as we don’t want to get into the semantics of it, it can’t be that bad of an idea since you’re already cleaning the floor. So go ahead, sweep everything from the front of the house out the door and then give your floors a nice deep clean.

The Washer & Dryer

When thinking about getting ready for the new year, do you think about cleaning out the washer and dryer? You should. Having a clean washer and dryer means having clean clothes to help you start anew. To help get rid of mineral buildup, add two cups of apple cider vinegar to an empty washer and run it through a cycle.

To clean your dryer, make sure you empty out the lint trap and soak it in a buck of dish soap and warm water to clean. And while that’s cleaning, take a microfiber rag and some apple cider vinegar and wipe the machine inside and out (you’ll also want to wipe down the outside of the washer). Then place your lint trap back in and you’ve got a clean dryer on your hands.

The Furniture

Any mattresses, couches, or wood furniture that you’ve neglected to clean all year? Well, now is the time to do it. Get out any special cleaner you need for the furniture, dust it off, and follow the instructions for a nice clean surface.

The Cabinets

How many times throughout the year do you touch your cabinets? Though we can’t always see it, the cabinets in your home get just as dirty as the surfaces in your home. So the last thing on our new year cleaning list is to go around with a bowl of hot water and dish soap and wipe down all of the cabinets using a microfiber rag.
