Pillows help you sleep at night and they add decorative flare to your bedroom but you may be neglecting these household staples when it comes to green cleaning. Even if you wash your bedding and pillow cases frequently you still need to take the time to show your pillow a little love. Studies show that after two years up to 1/3 of a pillows weight can contain dust mites and dead skin, not to mention germs. Don’t be afraid with regular cleaning this can be avoided. These simple tricks will help you keep your pillow squeaky clean.

• Pillows with down or feathers: These types of pillows are machine washable. Make sure to use the delicate cycle to wash feather filled pillows. Tumble dry them on a low setting. It is very important to make sure that they are completely dry. If there is residual moisture it can cause mildew. This is not something that needs to be done frequently if you are washing your pillow case regularly. Once every 6 months to a year is plenty, you should make it a part of your green cleaning schedule.
• Foam Pillows: These types of pillows are also machine washable but be sure to check care instructions. It is best to wash two at once so that you will have a balanced load. Use a very mild green cleaning detergent and the delicate cycle. The trick is to remove them from the washer as soon as they are not soaking wet. It is okay if they are damp. Dry the pillows on the lowest heat setting. Place tennis balls in the dryer to help fluff them. Remove the pillows as soon as they are dry to prevent damage to the foam.
• Time for new pillows: Green cleaning experts recommend that pillows be replaced about every 3 years. If you notice staining on the pillow or discomfort during sleep it may be best to replace it sooner.
