This is a tricky question because it all depends on the strength of the odor. If the smell is very strong and you need to eliminate it right away or you can’t figure out where it’s coming from you may want to consider an air purifier. 

But if the smell isn’t really that bad, and you know it’s coming from an old pair of shoes, then you may want to use a spray such as OdoBan that not only helps eliminate the odor but also kills certain bacteria.
