Tasks Perfect for Fall House Cleaning

on Sep 26, 2017

Spring time is synonymous with house cleaning, but the start of fall house cleaning can be the perfect opportunity to show your home a little love. Put down your pumpkin spice latte, roll up your sleeves and get to work on these five important fall house cleaning tasks.

  1. Rotate Your Mattress – Mattresses should be rotated every 3 months so new seasons can be a great reminder. Rotating your mattress will help prolong it’s life and it will help you get a better nights sleep. If you have a traditional mattress you can flip it. If you have a memory foam or pillow top mattress you should rotate it 180 degrees. This is also the perfect time to clean under and around your bed. Cleaning under the bed can some times be neglected as part of our normal house cleaning. Vacuum up any dust bunnies that may have set up shop in hard to reach places.
  2. Vacuum Upholstery – Give your upholstery more attention than you do as part of your usual house cleaning routine. Remove cushions from sofas and chairs and vacuum deep into crevices. If your dining room chairs are upholstered break out the crevice tool on your vacuum and hit the hard to reach places. Don’t forget things that are sometimes forgotten like office chairs and upholstered headboards.
  3. Switch clothes- Make your morning routine easier by adjusting your closet space. In San Diego we don’t have to dress seasonally as much as other areas, but there still may be some summer items that can be rotated to the back of your closet. Move things like sweaters and coats forward so they are easier to locate.
  4. Wash window screens – Often times during the summer months we leave our windows open and enjoy the fresh air. Before it gets cooler take some time to remove some of the debris that may have accumulated in your screens. To get your screens squeaky clean vacuum them thoroughly. After you have vacuumed them wipe them down with soapy water and rinse with clean water. Let them dry and then put them back in place. You will be amazed at the amount of dirt and grime that comes off them.
  5. Clean smoke detectors- This is one of the more important but most forgotten cleaning tasks. Overtime dust and other allergens can build up around the sensors on your smoke detector. This can reduce the performance of the sensors. Use the soft brush attachment on your vacuum to clean the sensors then wipe the device with a dry rag. After you have cleaned the device test to ensure it is working properly.
